Brighton’s Dark Horse Freddie J Watts returns to the fore with ‘Sweet Lady’

Mastering the art of sophistication in simplicity, the song is an ode to how good longing can feel.

When it comes to music, it can be said that simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance. Leonardo Da Vinci once said that “beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm, depend on simplicity” and of course, in so many ways, he is most certainly right. Now this brings us to the latest release from Freddie J Watts, described as a ‘dark horse’ within the Brighton underground music scene; he now brings us his brand new single ‘Sweet Lady’, a song that carries that cool, poetic, elegance of simplicity with it.

Boasting a whole host of some of Brighton’s finest artists, including members of the spellbinding New Eves and Daisy Rickman, there is magic and symbolism galore to be found here, with Watts’ world laying somewhere in a realm of pink moons, love letters, balls of yarn and crisp, cotton suits.

With a sound that recalls the likes of Nick Drake, The Magnetic Fields, Big Star and Townes Van Zandt, Freddie merges aspects of American Folk with British Psychedelia and Indie to create a tastefully romantic track that appeals for its raw, profound honesty and sentimentality. To be young and to feel love’s keen sting, is a concept Freddie explores well and with a masterful, sensitive approach that is distinctly absent from ego and far from the contrived.

In ‘Sweet Lady’, Freddie’s summer wine rich vocals are married with a beautifully charming arrangement that successfully strikes the perfect balance between too little and too much. This is the perfect meditation on the tempestuous nature of unrequited love, a stormy sea that is difficult to navigate without an adept navigator and a north-pointing moral compass. We’re excited to see what Freddie does next – and mind you, so should everyone else.

Recorded and mixed by Wax Machine’s very own Lau Ro, the single’s sound echoes a love affair with the golden age of American record making and doesn’t fall short in its delivery. ‘Sweet Lady’ is set for release with Crafting Room Recordings on August 8th, with a five-track EP hot on its heels.
